any recourse on downgrading contract even without any prior warning?

my place of employment has demoted me without any written/spoken warning of any wrong at work up until now. they claim i have been not working hard enough. for this year they will only supply me with a lesser (substitute) contract. the employee handbook states that downgrading only applies “when all other warnings have not been effective but if the action doesn’t warrant a dismissal”. they also state that we would get regular training, but i have yet to receive most of the “basic “ training. i’m on a yearly contract.

do i have any grounds to escalate the situation?

tldr been offered a lesser position because apparently i’ve not been great but have never received any feedback during the year stating this.
