Question for the ski/board bums out there: I have an opportunity to go skiing during the first weekend in April this year, and was wondering which areas would have the best conditions in terms of snow. I realize that this will be late season and that conditions won't be ideal.
I'm an advanced skier and a fan of off-piste and tree skiing (if possible in early April), which I know will limit where I can go here. I'm a somewhat tall foreigner and don't own a pair of skis or a car so it'll need to be somewhere with skis to rent in my size and relatively accessible using public transportation. I'm guessing the best litmus test would be further north and higher elevation, as far as late season conditions go.
Initial considerations: Hakkoda, Kagura, and Niseko. Possibly Asahidake. Any opinions on these for late season conditions? Anywhere else I should include?
Have been to: Niseko and Hakuba. I was at Niseko in March 2011, a week before 3/11. It rained one day while we were there which was a bummer for March. Snow conditions were okay, not great. I was at Hakuba last month. Temps were warm so snow conditions weren't great either. I've yet to experience that legendary Japow.
If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know! I posted this elsewhere but didn't get many answers so I figured I'd give r/japanlife a try. Thanks!
